William Allen Schaffer, MD, FACP - Biography 
Dr. Allen Schaffer is the Medical Director at The Acadia Hospital in Bangor,
Maine. Dr. Schaffer received his medical
degree from the University of
Washington in Seattle. He is board
certified in Internal Medicine and prior to his training in Psychiatry he held
clinical faculty appointments in the Departments of Medicine at the
University Of Louisville, and at the University Of Connecticut. In 2005 he chose to pursue
board certification in Psychiatry. He completed his Residency in Psychiatry at
the University of
Vermont and Fletcher Allen
Health Care in 2009.
Dr. Schaffer has held senior
leadership positions in health care companies and has led hospital quality
management and primary care delivery programs. He has also administered hospital
and institutional programs, and managed a multi-office medical group
practice.
He serves as a Trustee for the
Judge David
L Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. He completed an
appointment on the Subcommittee on Pay for Performance convened by the
Institute of
Medicine in 2006. He has
previously served on the Boards of The National Committee for Quality Assurance
(NCQA) and the National Advisory
Board for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Schaffer has
published in numerous medical and professional journals, including the New England
Journal of Medicine and the Annals of Internal
Medicine.
